Building of two classrooms

The project consisted of the construction of two (2) classrooms in the educational institution (preschool) «Estrellitas del saber», which serves, in morning and afternoon shifts, 202 boys and girls between the ages of 3,4 and 5 years; 8 teachers and 170 parents of the owners’ association «El Lúcumo», District of Ate, Province of Lima, Peru, as well as surrounding areas.

Progress Report on the Construction of Two (2) Classrooms for the Educational Institution “Estrellitas del Saber”

First Activity

In order to begin work, it was necessary to have the construction plans, the approval of the UGEL No. 06 who is the entity in charge of the institution «Estrellitas del saber» and the delimitation of the land that would be used for work. On January 17 2019 the meeting with the engineers of UGEL N ° 06, Mr. Mario Morán López and the director of the institution Ms. Génesis Rodríguez Román for the approval of the construction project was finalized and to coordinate technical points and the delimitation of the land.

This second activity is broken down into the next step, the delimitation of the land belonging to the educational institution since this had not yet been done, and it was necessary for the location of the construction area. The delimitation was requested by the direction of the school to UGEL N ° 06, which was made according to plans of the municipality of the district of Ate.

Second Activity

In view of the work that had to be carried out at the school, it was necessary to have the collaboration of the parents of the educational institution, who were summoned to a general meeting in which they were informed about these work that would be done, and after listening they volunteered to collaborate and support the work as needed.

Thus, parents volunteered to work in the following tasks:

 • Removing wooden modules.
 • Digging trenches.
 • Installing the electrical system (wiring and placing accessories).
 • Painting.

These tasks would be performed in community sessions called FAENAS on Sundays.

Third Activity

After the tasks to be performed had been coordinated by parents as well as management, those concerned were called to the first “faena” to remove the wooden modules. Work lasted approximately 4 hours, but the space was cleared for construction.

Fourth Activity

Proceeding with the work, the parents managed to remove the wooden modules to clear out the space needed for construction. However, the classrooms had a concrete floor and a second “faena” was organized to remove it.

Fifth Activity

Parents successfully removed the concrete slabs from the floors. However, due to the work undertaken, the area was now vulnerable and allowed easy access both to our children and outsiders to the institution. Therefore, parents undertook a third “faena” to raise a security fence.

Sixth Activity

Once the terrain was ready, work proceeded on marking it in order to situate the two future classrooms, according to the plans. This activity was supported by Mr. Morán López, who is in charge of the work.

Seventh Activity

In order to remove the dirt, parents represented by the APAFA requested machinery, which shortened the time spent on the activity. Work took an entire day.

Eighth Activity

After work using the machinery was completed, it was noticed that some sections of the trenches still needed additional work, so a fourth “faena” was called. Parents removed the remaining parts.

Ninth Activity

After ascertaining that the trenches had already been dug, Mr. Morán López presented himself at the educational institution with his staff to begin the work, including building the foundations, columns, pouring concrete and the foundation framework.

Tenth Activity

After reviewing the work done thus far, it was noted that some concrete would be missing. Therefore, on Monday, June 24, 2019, Mrs. Gianina del Carpio, Mr. Morán López and Ms. Génesis Rodríguez Román requested the support of the municipal administration of Ate. They were well received by mayor Edde Cuellar Alegría, who kindly arranged the donation of 600 bags of cement, as well as doors and windows needed for the new classrooms. A first donation of 100 bags was received on July 3rd, 2019, as part of the first agreement with the municipal administration.
